TECHNIQUE: Dig Deeper

The first answers to any question are usually the obvious, standard ones. In order to broaden our thinking, it’s some times necessary to eliminate the safe answers and probe further to get more meaningful insight.

  1. Identify an issue you’d like to brainstorm some solutions for.

  2. Gather your team together and explain that you’re going to

  3. Have them write their answers on post-its and place it in front of them. Give them 3 minutes to complete.

  4. Distribute sheets with boxed numbers 1-6.

  5. Tell them: Now, I’d like you to place them on this sheet and order them by which ones you feel are the best answers.

  6. Give them 2 minutes.

  7. When they’re done, take away the other post-its and set them aside.

  8. Tell them: These are a lot ideas. Unfortunately, we’re not going to use any of it for this session. I want you to write 5 additional ideas. You cannot use any of your top answers. You have 3 minutes. When you’re done, come up and place them on this board.

  9. After they’re done, distribute 5 stars each and have them come up and place stars on the ones they feel are the best answers.
